Matcha Green Tea Smoothie with Pistachios

After my last post on matcha, I thought I would follow it up with my favorite matcha green tea smoothie recipe. Say hello to my Matcha Green Tea Smoothie with Pistachios! As the name suggests, this smoothie has matcha green tea powder and roasted pistachios in it (along with some other cool stuff). This unique combo compliments each other very well with a sweet, creamy green tea flavor paired with a buttery undertone.

So if you are looking for a way to drink matcha regularly, this smoothie might be what you are looking for!

The Story Behind the Drink

So how did I come up with this matcha green tea smoothie?

This recipe was born years ago (back in March 2015) but was originally intended as an ice cream. If you read my last post on the Health Benefits of Matcha Powder, you know that I discovered matcha when I was looking to make my own green tea ice cream. I was sitting with my partner one night eating some green tea ice cream we had just made and it hit me like Archimedes’ eureka in the bathtub. Luckily, I wasn’t in the bathtub otherwise I might have made a fool of myself.

Unfortunately, following through with an idea never seems to be my strong suit. I’ve also got a terrible memory to boot. I was able to solve the latter problem by keeping a small notebook in my back pocket for jotting down ideas when they come to me. Apparently, I have a lot of them.

But I never seem to get around to actually doing most of them. And I’m sure you’ll agree with me on this. But what’s the point of a great idea if you never do it? It gathers dust on the bookshelf next to all other unfulfilled ideas in the library of dreams. It’s a bit of an obscure reference I know, but I’ll give you mad kudos if you get it.

It’s a shame too that I never acted on this idea sooner. I’m pretty sure green tea and pistachio has made its way around by now and is no longer quite as novel as it was back in 2015.

But the silver lining to this story? I may not have made that ice cream yet but I did realize this idea in the form of the best matcha green tea smoothie I have tasted yet.

Tips to Making a Matcha Green Tea Smoothie

As always I’ve got some suggestions on how to make this the best tasting smoothie for you. So here are some important things to keep in mind when making this recipe.

  • First, make sure you are using a culinary grade matcha. I made the mistake of buying ceremonial grade matcha thinking that since it was better quality it would make for a better smoothie. It doesn’t. The green tea flavor barely comes through. The culinary grade matcha has a much stronger bitter flavor. Not so great for drinking but very good for smoothies and other foods where you want a green tea flavor. And with how expensive ceremonial grade matcha is, it really is a waste to use it for cooking. In most other situations using better quality ingredients makes for a better dish. For example, a better quality wine that you would drink actually works better in cooking than using a cooking wine. But matcha green tea is the exception to this.
  • Roasted and unsalted pistachios I found work the best. You can use raw pistachios but the pistachio flavor will barely come through. Pistachios are so subtle to begin with and the roasted ones lend a stronger flavor.
  • Also, roasted pistachios have a crunch to them that makes for a great texture in the finished smoothie. I like to leave the pistachios out until the very end of blending so you get a chunky texture. When you blend the pistachios fully, you don’t get the texture and the flavor doesn’t come through as well. However, if you prefer no texture and a completely creamy smoothie, go ahead and blend them up as the smoothie is wonderful either way. I’d just recommend that you double up the amount to two tablespoons.
  • For the sake of the environment, I highly suggest using hemp milk for this recipe. The hemp plant is much more sustainable crop than almonds or soy. It is very hardy, needs low pesticides and little water, replenishes soil, and is a very nutrient rich food. Plus, it make a rich and creamy milk that tastes better than almond or soy milk (in my opinion). And it’s incredibly easy to make and requires no filtering. Now that being said, almond milk works very well for this recipe too.
  • Like every smoothie recipe I post, this one calls for frozen fruit. Instead of buying the pre-cut and frozen bananas, I prefer to freeze my own. Why do I prefer to freeze my own bananas instead of buying pre-frozen ones? Overripe bananas make for the best tasting smoothies. If you buy pre-frozen ones those will still work but they just aren’t as good. Also, it keeps the plastic waste out of the landfills.
  • Bananas are the easiest fruit to prepare frozen, it just requires a little bit of planning. I buy a few bunches of fresh bananas and let them sit until they are a few days overripe. I then break them up by thirds or fourths and loosely pack them in a freezer safe container or silicone bag. Let them sit in the freezer for a day at least and you’re ready to go. This process really takes very little of your time too and the results are completely worth it. If you make a ton of smoothies like I do, this is the better way to go.
  • Frozen fruit smoothies I think are lightyears better than fresh smoothies. They come out silky and creamy like a milkshake (a very healthy milkshake too!) but they also require a better blender. To make frozen fruit smoothies, you need a high-performance blender with variable settings. Unfortunately, a powerful blender like this is going to cost significantly more. But these blenders are so awesome! The blender I suggest is the Vitamix 5200. It is the one I own and use for all my recipes.   • Lastly, I like to make my smoothies very thick. To do this you need to pour in just enough hemp milk that it sits about an inch to 1 1/2 inches below the very top of the fruit. Be conservative about this. You can always add more milk. I start the blender up on a very low setting and see how it does with what I put in. If your blender is laboring to turn, just add more slowly until the blades turn. Be careful that you don’t turn the setting up too high before doing this or you’ll likely burn out your engine if you push it too hard.

Green Tea and Pistachio Smoothie

  • Blender

  • 1 cup banana, frozen (approx. 1-1½ large)
  • 1 – 2 tbsp. pistachios, roasted and unsalted
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp. matcha powder (culinary grade)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, ground
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened hemp milk


  • Place everything but the bananas, coconut oil and hemp milk in the blender. For texture leave out the pistachios too.
  • Add the banana.
  • Then the hemp milk until you reach about 1½ inches below the top of the banana.
  • Turn on the blender at the lowest setting and let it run until everything is starting to blend together. Add more liquid if needed to reach desired thickness.
  • Slowly turn the setting to high. Once you get the vortex, add the coconut oil and pistachios (if they haven't been added yet) and blend for another 5 seconds. Turn the blender off.
  • Serve immediately.


For a little crunchy texture, hold off adding the pistachios until the very end.
For extra sweetness, add 1-2 dates.

  • I love it!  Not a lot of people are into matcha and think it’s a funny looking drink. But I think people will catch on that it’s more than just a green drink in a cup. I drink matcha almost daily and have been craving like a pistachio and matcha ice cream. It’s so funny that I came across your post because I believe this will satisfy my strange craving.   • I have never tried matcha before but this smoothie looks so thick and creamy I think I will give it a try.  I am so glad that you pointed out that you need culinary matcha.  I didn’t know that there was also a ceremonial type also.  I will be sure to avoid buying the wrong type.

  • 2 of my favorite combo! I actually love the culinary matcha powder and ceremonial. I used to drink it when I attend the tea ceremony in Japan, it is bitter but taste amazing with Japanese traditional desserts. You are a genius to come up with this recipe! I was thinking if you put avocado in it too what will it be? Sounds so yummy. I am going to make it tonight, I have all the ingredients. Also totally agree with making your own frozen banana, i like to peel them and put it in a ziplock and when I crave ice cream and I don’t have it, my husband is an ice cream monster, I would just eat that banana it tastes amazing.       Avocado is one of those foods that you can put in virtually any smoothie. It’ll be amazing!! I’d keep it to just a few ounces but it’ll make this smoothie even creamier. Once avocado come back in season around here, I planned to start adding to mine. 

      That’s really cool you keep frozen bananas around. I do the same thing. Speaking of frozen bananas, I’m putting together a vegan green tea ice cream and one of the ingredients in it is frozen banana. If you check back down the road, I’m hoping to have the ice cream recipe posted. Sounds like something you might like.

    Now that’s a recipe. Match is ok on its own, but you’ve stepped it up another notch. I’m going to have one of these tomorrow, or over the weekend. And good thinking on the frozen banana. I’ve used that in the past, but this would give the smoothy a great fruit flavor. You’re the best, keep up the great recipe creation.

    I tried this recipe (used oat milk instead of hemp because that was what I had) and OMG. This was so yummy and hit the spot exactly to get at my pistachio craving. 10/10 I will be making this smoothie again!
