Hello! Welcome to Late Summer Mama, I’m Tina! At Late Summer Mama, I’m dedicated to supporting a zero waste and healthy lifestyle with a focus on families. A zero waste way of living can be done by anyone and is much easier to do than most people realize.

Why Late Summer Mama? Why Zero Waste?

The original purpose of this website was to give focused support to women like me who waited until their 30s and 40s to have children. Through that, I wanted to encourage sustainable and ecologically sound practices but that was a secondary goal.

However, at the turn of the new year, I read an article on the current state of climate change and I was devastated at the news I read. If there is anything that will make a person really start to think about the future, it’s having a child. Not that we as people don’t think about the future otherwise, but nothing solidifies the possible reality of planetary destruction like thinking your child might be the last generation to see any coral reefs (among other things) or see a summer that doesn’t reach over 120F.

Like a lightning bolt, I realized that this was the mission I should be working towards not only in my personal life but also helping other families to do the same. Just think about all the waste that one infant brings in their first year of life. For example, how many diapers end up in landfills, or even better all those disposable wipes that end up in our water? These products of convenience do not decompose in the landfills and usually contain plastic fibers as well. And that is just one example.

The best part of all is that my mission doesn’t actually have to change that much. It’s a very happy coincidence that living a zero waste lifestyle also encourages a healthy one too! So I can still support families by giving them quick and simple food recipes as well as easy DIY bath, beauty, and cleaning products too.

And it’s also another happy side benefit that going zero waste will ultimately save your (and our) household money which is something almost any family could use.

Facts About the Late Summer Mama

I’m originally from Texas and spent the last decade in Austin. Very recently, my family and I moved to Portland, Oregon and have been enjoying the change. I’m a new mother to a very spirited little girl that brings much laughter and challenge to my life every day. She is my inspiration for much of what I do. Between taking care of her at home and writing on Late Summer Mama, I keep very busy.

I have been an environmentalist most of my life and a very avid supporter of conservation action. As a child, I wanted to follow in the footsteps of Dian Fossey (Gorillas in the Mist) and become a zoologist. I deeply cared for our natural world and wanted to dedicate my life to conserving as much of it as I could from the excessive destruction of humanity. As a young adult, I worked for over 10 years with an environmental engineering company. It was through that work that I saw firsthand the overwhelming degree of trash that ends up in our waterways.

I’ve researched for years on alternative medicines including aromatherapy, essential oils, Qigong, meditation, Tai Chi, and herbal supplements. The subject of alternative medicine has interested me for a long time, however, I’m not a nutritionist or doctor.

Other things that interest me would be fitness activities. The human body and what it’s capable of has become a newer passion of mine. I have a black belt in Kung Fu and studied a few other martial arts. Parkour is another discipline I would like to learn. I enjoy jogging, camping, and hiking. My experience with martial arts and fitness has taught me that the mind doesn’t trump the body. In fact, it seems to be the opposite.

    • Hi Anita!

Thanks you! I’m glad you like it. I’m not keeping up with it as much as I was as my toddler is very demanding of my time at the moment but I am still trying.

      All the Best, Tina
